Former Employee – worked at Intermec Technologies
Pros – - The folks below the VP level are hard working and generally good people
- They do have some work/life balance outside of the Finance and Accounting areas
Cons – --Constant fear of layoffs as they think cutting costs is the way to profitability
--Poorly managed company, no leadership in any area
--Little or no recognition for good work
--They expect you at times to work until 1 or 2 am in Finance/Accounting for weeks at the end of a quarter because of their broken systems.
--Poor morale, especially in Finance
--Too laid back--poor performance was not penalized, great performance was not rewarded
--Not a place for young people to grow their career--many work for less than two years and leave for better opportunities for better companies
--Extremely political--management was ignorant to bad news. Not willing to get rid of known dead wood simply because they play golf with the SVP.
--Huge turnover, especially in Finance and Accounting
--Very passive-aggressive environment especially in the senior management ranks.
Advice to Senior Management – Intermec is a stagnant environment and not for those who really want to increase their skills professionally. The company sells great products, but it's true that you wouldn't know it working there. There was no sense of pride and accomplishments amongst employees and the differences in performance expectations among the organizations was baffling. Supply chain, operations, Finance and sales are truly in need of massive change.
The CEO does not communicate anything inspiring to employees. All senior management communicates is "we need to improve our margins". All of that is definitely true but they believe in just cutting heads to do that which will never get the company anywhere.
If you are a "free thinking" individual, this is definitely not the place for you. Management only wanted to hear what they wanted to hear and no amount of telling them will have them change their minds. One of the SVPs there talks so much that everyone knows he doesn't listen to anything outside his own head. Management belief system is based on politics and not performance. And if you work there, don't ever rock the boat with something they don't want to hear. I've seen entire departments that had morale so bad that people cried at their desks. Many were depressed working there but given the economic times, it was tough for them to think of leaving. Morale plummeted with people being let go left and right without even an acknowledgement of why, yet senior management was so disconnected they continued to stay in their offices and wonder what was going on.
If Intermec had the right senior management team it really could be a great company. Senior management has been told over and over again that there is no strategy -- they need to put one together and listen to the folks that actually tell them what's wrong. They need to act on those things and fix them. I truly hope there is a complete shake-up at the top for the company's sake. The current crew has run this great ship aground and all of them need to walk the plank. A fresh set of competent, aggressive non-crony executives would do this company a world of good.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
