I worked at Intermedix full-time

Pros

Excellent field to have a career in. State of the art technology.

Cons

No training program for new hires. Lack of mentors amongst the upper management. Poor guidance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop looking at hourly employees as issues. They are overworked and under utilized. Focus instead on mid-level management, as they have little to no leadership skills. Their authority is often undermined by their own incompetence. No open door policy and a "hands-off" approach to mentoring employees makes the unapproachable.

Current Employee - Software Engineer in Pittsburgh, PA

I have been working at Intermedix full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Pittsburgh office is nice. Everyone is friendly, culture is laid back, local senior management is extremely competent and they have garnered the respect of everyone in the office. Pay is decent for an Engineer in Pittsburgh. There are a lot of opportunities to learn and a lot of smart people. For the most part, Pittsburgh has been able to maintain their office culture from prior to acquisition.

    Cons

The rest of the company is completely different in culture. The rules seem to be much stricter and people seem to be afraid of getting blamed for doing the wrong thing, afraid of getting fired, etc. It's extremely difficult to work with other offices due to their conservative "keep doing what we are doing unless our jobs are threatened". That means delaying upgrades, fixing bugs, correcting really really really bad problems.

It's also somewhat difficult, in my opinion, to work with people who are not in the Pittsburgh office. Some seem a bit below average on ability. This makes it hard to get information from them or have them do something because often communicating your needs involves also explaining basic concepts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There really needs to be a culture change within the company if these grandiose plans of InterMedix becoming a serious technology company are to come to fruition. Embrace mistakes and encourage people to correct them. Don't nit-pick about arbitrary rule breaking or people not making "numbers". Focus on quality and people who want to deliver quality. Get rid of people who don't.
