Pros

There are some nice folks there.

Cons

Weigh heavily any decision to work at Internap Network Services with what other job opportunity you be giving up even should pay be better at Internap. Internap can often prove to be a short term employment opportunity for many people.

Turnover across Internap as a whole is high, not just in the Sales organization.

This is especially true in the Marketing organization.

If you are interviewing for a position at Internap, ask the following questions:

What turnover has the department seen in the last 12-18 months? What is the style of the leadership in the department? Ask what the style is of the hiring manager. Can you expect to be given latitude to do your role or will you or your work be managed very closely? How are people valued in the department? What is the opportunity to get promoted in the organization? If you are interviewed by anyone other than departmental management, ask how they like working at the company. Ask where each person worked before - are there commonalities? Is the position a new one or replacing someone - what happened to that person or why did they leave Internap?

How would you describe the culture of the company? Is the culture win-win or win-lose (if there is hesitation on the answer, the answer should be self-evident).

Again, weigh heavily your options, understand what kind of work environment you thrive in and determine if Internap feels like a match to that. Trust your instincts.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Based on the number of executive-level and other departures and firings over the past two or so years, my estimation is that top leadership does not value strategic insight and advice if it challenges that leadership's own formulated opinions.

    Pros

    - Internap has an industry leading product (low latency IP), and a good commission potential for those that can overcome the company's challenges.

    Cons

    - Internap's innovative low-latency bandwidth product is loosing traction in the market, do to the availability of viable alternative options from competitors (Cisco OER/PFR hardware solution, MZIMIA''s blended IP solution, etc).
    - Market pressures (large number of competitors, low barrier to entry into market) have further accelerated Internap's downward spiral. Bandwidth is largely commoditized, and a "race to the bottom" mentality prevails in the industry with regards to pricing levels. As a result, prices (and profits) are rapidly approaching zero.
    - Internap has experienced and erosion of their value proposition. Internap fancies itself as the Ferrari of bandwidth, which is a tough pitch when the current economic downturn has left customers with a Honda Accord budget. Even companies who truly do need the best IP performance possible are finding viable options that are less expensive than Internap.
    - Aside from Internap's IP product, the company's product portfolio is weak. Managed servers and Content Delivery (CDN) products are far from best of breed. Colo (data center) service offerings are ok, but with only 6 or so company owned colo sites, the footprint is weak.
    - The company's strategic shift away from colo resell, and towards sales of company owned colocation assets was much needed to raise company margins. As a practical matter for prospective sales people, this change has an extremely negative impact of saddling all AE's with the same quota, even though many of the sales regions lack colo to sell in their market (note: I can only comment on Internap's policies from when I was there, and it is possible that Internap may have adjusted quota's by regional colo availability since I left). Internap recruiter's may tell prospective hires that this is a non-issue, because AE's can sell colo that exists outside of their market. The reality for most customer's is that they want their production colo facilities near their offices, and HA/DR (backup) sites somewhere else. For AE's working with large enterprise customers who are looking for multiple colo sites, this may not be as much of a problem, just hope that the customer's target locations match up with Internap's modest colo footprint.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Continue to drive high performance expectations of AE's. This expectation of sales was always strongly articulated, and it should continue.
    - Develop a company culture that demonstrates that Internap values it's employees, instead of constantly telling them (explicitly or implicitly) that they are disposable. This issue makes INAP a seriously tough place to work.
    - Sincerest wishes for good luck with the company turn-around.

    Pros

    Mid sized company in business with stable revenues. Nice offices. Competent middle mananagement. Competitive salaries and benefits. New management an improvement over old management.

    Cons

    No corporate growth in sight. Tremendous employee turnover. No stability. Senior management aloof. Teamwork discouraged. CEO rarely ventures out of office. Big company bureaucracy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get out of your offices. Work on team work. Stop the blame game. Figure out how to end the incredibly high employee turnover.
