I worked at International Paper

Pros

practice diversity in hiring key positions, promote safety and a healthy work environment, ability to have upward mobility, good interaction between departments, health benefits, good 401K program

Cons

asked to do more with less (less support personnel, less tools to work with), too many projects and not enough internal support to see them fully develop

Advice to ManagementAdvice

need to look very closely at the talent pool that you are letting go do to restructuring as well as those you think are going to remain for the long haul and make sure you do a thorough job in quarterly / annual reviews

I have been working at International Paper

    Pros

The Albany Paper Mill was the first Western Kraft/Willamette Industries paper mill. It was the largest employer in county in tax revenue, employee salaries, etc.

    Cons

IP closed the mill at the end of 2009. The small paper machines were not competitive in the global market. The back end of the mill was new (by industry standards, less than 10 years) and may find new life in future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's too late now for the Albany mill.

Secure mature company, conservative and slow paced. Not a company for aggressive, intelligent, young go getters.

    I worked at International Paper

    Pros

Commodity, cyclical, manufacturing industry that is mature and stable. This is a safe low stress company.

    Cons

Bureaucratic organization, old pyramid model - old world corporate culture as IP is a 100+ years old company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to culturally change to one that is less "stodgy" and old, if you are to attract better talent.
