Pros

Invensys has a flexible work schedule, allows us to balance work and home life, decent benefits although they seem to decrease every year, challenging work, and good clients.

Cons

Pay is below industry. Even though i have opportunity to grow, the typical percent raise is 5%. They say their hands are tied and cannot do anything about it.

    Pros

    - Good place to learn automation & control - Good project opportunities, including international ones - Wide variety of projects (eg. Oil & Gas, Nuclear etc), with their own unique challenges - Lots of good employees, had several friends - Many good supervisors and mid level managers.

    Cons

    - Promotion from within was limited to lower/mid management. Senior management were in many cases outsiders with no industry experience - Compensation (pay) was not that good - Employee performance assessment was a joke. - Silo mentality. Each region is a P&L, so plenty of turf wars. I've seen 2 different regions trying to compete for the same project!

    Advice to Management

    - Hire/promote from within - Take a long hard look at the Cognizant deal. Do you really want to end up like Boeing with its 787? - Listen to your customers - While you may have some of the best technology (Foxboro, Tricon, ROMeo etc), sharpen up your sales/marketing - Move beyond the regional P&L model which breeds unhealthy internal strife.

  2. Sr. Management out of touch...

    Pros

Intelligent and friendly co-workers, who were easy to work with when allowed to do their jobs. Interesting, complex. embedded systems work. Many employees have 30 or more years with the company, providing continuation for older installed systems.

    Cons

Upper management does not understand the process control business. The clients (oil refineries, etc.) want their installed control systems to have a 25-40 year lifespan. It is expensive to re-instrument an oil refinery. Yet some bean counter in upper management decided become a "Microsoft Partner" and to build the new product line on Windows based platforms, requiring massive software porting efforts every 2 to 5 years when MS comes out with a new system. Why Windows over Linux based systems? The lawyers said with Linux they would have no one to sue!!! As if anyone has successfully sued Microsoft.

    Advice to Management

Value your in-house expertise and begin active transfer of that knowledge to the new team of employees. The "old timers" are retiring and taking an immense amount of product knowledge with them. Learn more about the customer needs and problems. They ultimately pay for everything, yet Invensys insists on building what they want to sell, not what the customer wants to buy.
