I have been working at Iron Mountain Inc

    Pros

Iron Mountain does a good job of communicating its mission and core values to the employees, which underscores the expectations on the employees to live those values. They also seem to have a knack for hiring good people whose work habits align with those values. The company does annual employee satisfaction surveys and takes action to address some of the low-scoring areas. Because Iron Mountain is so big, there are a lot of opportunities for growth and advancement. As a result, many of the current employees who have been there more than a few years have held several different positions -- which allows for knowledge sharing and cross-training. The company used to operate in distinct silos, but there are efforts underway to minimize that. There are a lot of opportunities for employees to be rewarded and recognized for their work -- those public pats on the back are important, and something that a lot of companies forget to do.

    Cons

The organizational chart is a confusing mess, with many many layers of management. It can be difficult to figure out how things operate and how the pieces fit together. The company is years behind in terms of the technology tools employees have to work with. While the benefits package overall is pretty good, the paid time off is very stingy. In a sense, the company culture works counter to the idea of work/life balance -- many people work nights and weekends and during their vacations, and other employees are sometimes given hints that they're not good team players if they have expectations for personal/family time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show greater respect for the personal lives and work/life balance of your employees. I really believe that quality time off to recharge the batteries makes people better workers and more productive when they ARE in the office.

I worked at Iron Mountain Inc

    Pros

Lower level managers openly share advice and experience. Good opportunities to network within and without the company. Diverse customers allows one to learn about many industries.

    Cons

Limited structure and leadership. Leadership is very hands off with helicopter approach. Company rushes out initiatives with minimal groundwork put in place resulting in half-baked rollouts that staff and customers must navigate through.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overly focused on price increases, pricing company out of markets, and slow to respond to changing market conditions. Bring focus back to providing a good, consistent, customer experience.
