Depending on who you work for; it could be a great experience or an average experience

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at J. C. Penney

ProsGreat people to work with and the upper level management is engaged with the associates. Pay was great at first; then the economy busted and that went downward. Open hours are not crazy on the weekends ex. 6am at Kohls. jcp is only open from 10-9 M-S & 11-6 Sun.

ConsIf your a manager; don't expect to work the 40 - 45 hrs expected. Expect a 50hr work week minimal. Health insurance is expensive and the choices are slim. Job security as of late is not what it used to be due to the layoffs of thousands of employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork through the health insurance and reduce the cost to the employee and give more choices. Also, need to work with the DM's on treating the leadership that is left with more respect and don't contradict what the company is stating. It only confuses the store teams. If you want top talent in the associate ranks; raise the average wage your going to pay them and increase FT ratio to create loyalty. Educate the customers coming into the stores utilizing phamplets explaining the changes; there are not enough associates to hit everyone coming in the door.
