My experience was eye-opening and wonderful.

I worked at J. C. Penney

Pros

The staff is very friendly and supportive of their fellow co-workers. If a co-worker is in the middle of returning merchandise to its proper place and is asked by a customer for assistance, those around her will offer to finish her job while she helps a customer. All the staff is flexible and will shift to take turns working in any area that needs attention.

Cons

As with most retail jobs, the need to be open late/early, weekends and holidays does require lots of flexible scheduling for the employees. Since 'work' days and times vary, having activities outside of work can be difficult. Joining a Thursday(Monday, etc.) night club would be hard to do.

Wonderful job, with a family type atmosphere until new CEO and young, unexperienced store manager in place.

    I worked at J. C. Penney full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very good at promoting associates already in place, 25% associate discount, very good benefits.

    Cons

Senior management consisted of some people who were very unfair; criticism and reprimands by senior managers on the sales floor in front of other associates and customers. Manager in charge of associate engagement was the worst at this; heard of this happening many times and it caused morale in the store to fall sharply.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to associate feedback about senior management; no reason for a large group to be having problems with one manager. Treat your associates with respect; you may find that they treat you with respect.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at J. C. Penney part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good discount, Flexible scheduling, and they are often looking for new people.

    Cons

Not the greatest place to advance. Their pay is market average but not great. I left when the new regime came in and made some odd choices. Dramatic shifts in scheduled hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the stores the ability to retain the employees they want to keep by allowing them easier ability to give raises.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
