Former Employee - Shift Manager in London, England (UK)

I worked at J D Wetherspoon full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Friendly people, flexible hours, pub isn't too busy. breaks are reasonable. complies with standard training procedures

Cons

Pay is awful, hours are very long, made to do work that isn't in your description. Working extra hours sometimes past closing hours and not being paid.
Under-paid, over-worked, management did not comply to direct-gov work guidelines
massive staff turnover

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give staff reasonable hours, pay them if they work past their hours, don't spend all of your shift in the office and let everyone else do the work

Former Employee - Bar Associate in London, England (UK)

    I worked at J D Wetherspoon part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The staff are all quite young and a lot of fun.

    Cons

    Long hours
    Minimum wage
    Occasional unpleasant customer
    Often late shifts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training should involve more of what the staff will be doing day to day and less about corporate objectives. This is because the people behind the bar don't decide corporate objectives and don't really really affect them.

Former Employee - Shift Manager in Nottingham, England (UK)

    I worked at J D Wetherspoon full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Free shares, people with no formal qualifications can get into management positions, excellent training and learning opportunities.

    Cons

Poor pay for even the managers. Minimum wage for staff. 50 hour weeks. Easy to get fired, everything is a disciplinary offense!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your shift managers more, management is a huge responsibility, and under £8 per hour? Disgraceful!
