Current Employee - Associate in Tokyo (Japan)

I have been working at J.P. Morgan for more than 5 years

Pros

- pay is bad within the industry, but above par for what you do
- non-pay benefits are good (for example maternity-leaves, etc)
- people are friendly (arrogance, etc exists but less than other companies within the industry)
- company has a strong brand value

Cons

- bureaucracy and politics x 100
- changes are very slow
- people not driven to make improvements
- performance has a tendency of not getting rewarded
- skill development ignored, no investment from the firm
- mobility is half a myth
- middle management structured in my complicated way. this glorifies the management job but creates large amounts of headcount waste.
- sometimes it feels like there are more managers and MDs than the actual works (analyst/associate levels)
- high performers leave the firm first

I have been working at J.P. Morgan full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-The company brand is very strong and really does open doors to other companies
-Leadership is very strong and they are constantly in communication with everyone at the company

    Cons

-Back office work is very boring
-Opportunities are limited at smaller offices
-There isn't really any preference given to employees applying for other roles/locations within the company
-Ambition to become the best manager in the investment world means there are many rules and regulations in place that often feel quite restrictive (average pay, limits on expenses, many restrictions on gifts, etc)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Pay more attention to mobility and career advancement for lower level employees. We don't all want to stay until VPs before we transfer to another office.

    Pros

Good and friendly colleagues, good transparency

    Cons

Underpaying, only some senior managers are ok. Huge discrepancy between compensation. Little chance for mobility, people think they are better or should get paid less because they work at Jpm. Asia ex management on markets (trading and sales) is weak. Especially local talent
