A friendly environment that made an effort to make a boring job a little less boring

I worked at J Sainsbury part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    - You get to meet amazing people.
    - There's a light and non-corporate feel (for example dressing up on red nose day).
    - There's a real active effort to make the colleagues matter. The company's policy is that if the employees are happy, so will the customers.
    - Good, mostly worthwhile, training.
    - Lots of opportunities for extra work.

    Cons

    - Breaks were often late or supervisors didn't reply to reply to requests very quickly sometimes.
    - The till systems were quite old.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Spend some money upgrading the tills and making them modern - it'll look better as well as being easier and quicker to use.
    - Make sure employees get breaks on time.
    - Allow anyone over 18 to approve an under 18 to sell alcohol; it's the person who's under 18's job to ID the customer.
    - Ask employees before making big changes - for example a load of tills were removed when we really needed them.
    - When a colleague quits, allow the store to hire someone new if they need them.

Great colleagues let down by poor senior management

I worked at J Sainsbury part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Colleagues are generally great and customers friendly. The staff discount seems mean on the surface but since you can buy practically anything at Sainsbury's (from weekly grocery shops to televisions, laptops and more) that means you get 10% off almost all purchases you would make.

    Cons

Senior management are increasingly out of touch with what's happening on the floor. They also seem to have little knowledge of working time directive rules and are willing to schedule illegal shifts. They also developed a nasty habit of changing shifts without informing employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work your way round the store from time to time. Spend an hour a week doing an entry level job (shelf-stacking, checkouts etc.). It'll teach you more about what's happening than you could learn in any other way.
