Pros

Lots of talented employees with good ethics and willingness to get the job done right. Plenty of opportunities to grow and learn more in your area from others. Small company with flat structure that allows for quick decisions and action.

Cons

Employee benefits are not as good as related to other similar companies in our field. Small company dynamics sometimes gets in the way of moving forward with new ideas.

Great company until management change in 2010, which brought about power struggle that crippled great work environment

I worked at J-W Energy Company

    Pros

Very co-operative group of employees, and great HR department. They are an intergrated E&P and Services company, which would help you learn a lot if you talk to the staff around. Very helpful staff but management can be tricky to deal with.

    Cons

Management does not spell out goals on which to achieve success. No monthly financial meetings with employees, which leaves employees in the dark about how the company is performing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the shared services model. It is a shame how it is run.

Poor communication, lack of direction from company leadership, shrinking company, forced religious values.

I have been working at J-W Energy Company

    Pros

As with most oil & gas companies, life/work balance is good and pay scale is good, nice new office building with decent cubes. Most of the people you work with on a daily basis are friendly and helpful.

    Cons

-Expect to be micromanaged, even if you are a member of management. Any expertise you have will quickly be dismissed.
-On a number of occasions I've witnessed employees being berated by management during meetings, this seems to be a part of the management culture.
-Communication is extremely poor from leadership down.
-Advancement is based on being friends of, or part of the family that owns the company.
-There's no clear direction from company leadership, tasks change on a regular basis and there seems to be no real commitment to completing projects. This is a strange quality to go along with micromanaging your employees, but they pull it off by redirecting efforts constantly.
-There's no framework for providing feedback to employees, yearly reviews are non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Talk to your employees, get some feedback and make an attempt at raising morale.
-Assign people to positions where they have expertise, and allow them to do their jobs and make basic decisions. Stop placing responsibility in the hands of family friends who aren't qualified, this widens the gap in communication with the people that are actually doing the work.
-No more business formal attire, every other company in the industry is business casual.
