I have been working at JDA Software

Pros

Great people and excellent opportunities for growth. Really seems to be an emphasis on team work which makes work a lot more rewarding. Compensation appears to be very fair and benefits package as good as any place I've worked. Company is growing at a reasonable rate and there seems to be lots of opportunities for JDA to continue to acquire new business with a portfolio of products that is second to none. Company does a great job of trying to balance work and life.

Cons

History of layoffs seems to be always in the back of people's minds, though this is an industry hazard.

Retail software company is a favorable employer for field staff

    Pros

As a public company, JDA Software is reasonably accountable for their performance. They offer reasonable benefits like medical coverage and a 401(k) with typical employer matching, but the biggest benefit is probably the employee stock purchase plan, allowing employees to purchase stock every 6 months at a 15 percent discount of the lower of the starting and ending price for the period.

The company traditionally has a large stash of cash in the bank, offering reasonable stability. However, they have often resorted to layoffs to generate goodwill on Wall Street despite the ill will generated in house. They have a remarkable ability to sway investors, using the changes from their acquisitions to hide period-to-period downturns without analysts or investors noticing.

Field staff who can quickly learn new products will enjoy working for this company that recognizes and rewards them.

    Cons

Some of the senior management own very little stock in the company, making their choices and decisions very questionable at times. The company puts a bigger emphasis on billable hours than on new software sales, with the corresponding favoritism shown to field staff over corporate staff like development and support.

The company has expanded through acquisitions, sometimes without regard for how the new staff and products will fit in with the existing company. They also don't back up their statements to employees with their actions; having told remote offices that there were no plans to consolidate, then announcing remote office closings to get rid of most of the remote staff, but then keeping the remote offices open anyway.

The company took an underperforming Development executive and turned him into an underperforming Sales executive, and have since been trying to modify his role to minimize the damage done to the bottom line. This sends the wrong message to the employees, and they would be better off eliminating the mistake and moving forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the right management in place, keep your quality employees, and stop shifting strategy.
