I worked at JDRF full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Very worthy cause you can feel good about.
Since most medical non-profit fundraising organizations work much the same way, you can transfer your skills to most any other similar organization. Through the mediocrity, you can find some excellent, caring, and kind people in the organization.

Cons

Not employee focused at all. It's all about the big donor. Not the average volunteer, not the average staff person, not the most dedicated walkers, just Board members and large donors.
HR does not assist employees having problems with managers, and there seems to be rampant abuse. Salaries are fair. Not the lowest, not the highest but there's very little in the way of bonuses or raises. There is very little workplace innovation. Very, very little recognition of good job performance. My office seemed to have perpetual low morale and excitement. Lots of layoffs at the national level, constant strategy change.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in employees. Respond to their concerns. Let employees respond to evaluations and evaluate their own managers. Reward innovative thinkers.

I have been working at JDRF full-time

    Pros

Great mission. Staff hard working and pleasant.

    Cons

No accountability for Exec Directors and Assoc. ED's. Advancement based on favoritism not performance, therefore very little potential for growth - a popularity contest, if you will. ED's and AED's have no knowledge of processes, databases, or policies, yet judge performance of staff. Lengthy web-based trainings only, no in-person trainings. Board Members seem to be more concerned with personal benefits of being on the board as opposed to helping meet fundraising goals, elitist attitudes, treat staff and volunteers like servants. No presence of HR staff at chapters and HR managers in NY are unresponsive and only respond to ED's and AED's. Staff is on their own if have a problem with manager - no one for staff to turn to. Again, no accountability for ED's/AED's. Staff member will be fired without consideration of ED's/AED's wrongful doings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold ED's and AED's accountable for their knowledge and management skills, or there lack of. Pay more attention to Chapter staff concerns. Not everyone is a lying disgruntled employee. Give Chapter staff opportunity to rate performance of supervisors - implement 360 reviews.

I have been working at JDRF full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Everyone at JDRF values the need to find a cure for T1D.

    Cons

There is absolutely no transparency. Employees are often confused by what is going on in the organizational structure, with policies and procedures, etc. If you ask too many questions you're considered insubordinate. If you don't ask enough you're "dropping the ball." The turnover rate is high. There are too many egos in leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, they seem to be only interested in listening to the desires and suggestions of the IBOD or Major Donors.
