Not what they think they are.

R&D Manager (Current Employee)
Trier (Germany)

I have been working at Japan Tobacco full-time for more than 7 years

ProsStrong desire to be number one in the industry. Self development is actively encouraged, with many training programs offered. Good chance to travel.

ConsNepotism is a way a life. People are promoted without being able to back this up with the necessary skills or experience. Senior management have very little idea of what goes on at lower levels.

Despite stating diversity as a good thing, some R&D departments lack this. Location for R&D means talent retention or attraction is difficult.

Often there's huge resistance to change.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep your promises. Promote those capable of being a manager, rather than through nepotism or simply being good at their current job.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
