Current Employee - Global Functional Department Intern in Saint Petersburg (Russia)
Current Employee - Global Functional Department Intern in Saint Petersburg (Russia)

I have been working at Japan Tobacco as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Very interesting tasks for an intern and challenging responsibilities. Great team of individuals always provides support to interns. Many training sessions and business games.

Cons

The compensation is not reasonable for an intern to live in the capital.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I suggest reconsidering compensation package to interns working full-time.

Current Employee - R&D Manager in Trier (Germany)
Current Employee - R&D Manager in Trier (Germany)

I have been working at Japan Tobacco full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong desire to be number one in the industry. Self development is actively encouraged, with many training programs offered. Good chance to travel.

    Cons

Nepotism is a way a life. People are promoted without being able to back this up with the necessary skills or experience. Senior management have very little idea of what goes on at lower levels.

Despite stating diversity as a good thing, some R&D departments lack this. Location for R&D means talent retention or attraction is difficult.

Often there's huge resistance to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your promises. Promote those capable of being a manager, rather than through nepotism or simply being good at their current job.

Former Employee - Assistant in Geneva (Switzerland)

I worked at Japan Tobacco full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very multicultural environment, diversity encourages employees to see things in new ways

    Cons

Nepotism is rife, Promotions are given to the chosen few (not necessarily the most deserving either), change is avoided like the plague and feedback on performances is sparse
