I worked at Jefferies & Company

Pros

Since it is a small shop, you have a good opportunity to learn and progress within the firm. Less bureaucracy than other shops.

Cons

If there are no deals going on, work can be really boring and compensation will be hit hard. Smaller groups compared to other firms so less opportunity to grow network.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please work hard for deal flows. If there are no deal flows, please help in assigning more meaningful tasks. Thank you.

    Pros

Working on smaller middle-market deals means your work during the transaction has an impact. You have the opportunity to speak to the senior management of the client companies.

    Cons

The senior bankers are not supportive of work-life balance AT ALL. Very political corporate culture. Not very supportive of women.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The corporate culture is the main problem I have with the firm but it is something that is difficult to fix.

    Pros

Good place to work if you are looking to work in middle-market. They don't have the brand recognition of other banks outside of financial circles but they do work on some good deals. Comp is similar to other banks although bonuses are probably lower.

    Cons

Still not considered a top shop for M&A compared to other middle-market banks, although they have a decent flow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out who you are, your core competencies, and strengthen those areas. Don't try to be everything to everybody.
