Great mission and innovative programming, employees underpaid yet appreciated.

ProsDiverse community--many cultures and all ages. Scholarship awards. Employee Appreciation Week. Fitness center discount. Cultural events: films, music, plays, contests. Relaxed dress code and atmosphere. Serving members who are grateful for all the center offers, especially the elderly.

ConsLow pay is typical for a non-profit community center. Sometimes rigid rules prevent employee initiative and creativity. Some managers have been there for over 20 years, which sometimes leads to an automatic response of "we have always done it this way." But it also means that there are experienced managers who really know the ins and outs.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe open to more ideas from employees about possible changes to improve. Provide a confidential way for employees to make suggestions. At the annual meeting, show employees how some of their ideas were acted upon in the past year and what a great difference they made (saving money, better service to members, making the work easier). Pay a few employees (representing different departments) to attend committee meetings held four times a year to discuss how to implement any changes that affect the workers. Publish the positive results in an employee news letter.
