I have been working at JoS. A. Bank full-time for more than a year

Pros

Great discount on quality merchandise. It is rewarding to sell quality and value to customers.

Cons

Brutal hours and difficult to get quality employees because of low income available when working for commission in low volume store.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change pay structure for low column stores and forget extended hours in small markets.

    Pros

The customers are very interesting. If you are really good with your customer service skills and know what management allows you to do for them, you can handle any issue and keep the customer happy!

    Cons

Too much flipping of schedule. Company has little to NO incentives for employees. Good days are often forgotten the very next day if an Associate happens to have a low-sales day... Not good to keep an Associate geared up to do better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Needs to be open-minded to employee suggestions regarding better representation of store in order to satisfy customers FIRST and then Regional second. This statement is based on comments as well as personal interaction with customers. There is NOT enough team spirit to rally for a good day, no encouragement. Too many faxes stating how bad a store is doing (beat down)... IT'S NOT ALWAYS THE SALES ASSOCIATES CAUSING THE LOW SALES - THEY SHOULD FIND OUT FROM EACH STORE ON THAT DAY WHAT THE ISSUE MAY BE. This type of message relay doesn't make the Associates feel any better, especially when they are doing their best!!!!!

    Pros

The best thing about working here are your fellow employees because you are all stuck "in the same boat" and try to cheer each other up, while working together, in order survive the day.

    Cons

Everything is a downside, while working at Jos A Bank! Long hours. Unattainable goals! No appreciation for one's hard work. You can try everything possible to meet goals, but if you don't have any customers coming into the store, you can not meet those goals. Too many sales campaigns. They all run in together. The customer now expects the merchandise to be given to them at a discount. These sales have cheapened "the name" of Jos A Banks product. The product isn't constructed as it used to be and is cheaply made. Some staff would rather do floor work than sell because they know that they are not going to make any commission anyway. Base pay is low and not comparable to other retail stores' pay. The employee discount is terrible and discriminates against women, since you can only buy clothes at a discount for yourself or spouse (if you have one),therefore you can't buy at discount if you are a woman. Usually the customers' sales are better than the employee discount. They need new product. They pull out the same clothing year after year after year, therefore the regular customers "already have that". If there is something new on the floor, it sells and you don't get replenished with the new product so you are stuck with a store of product that was there 5 years earlier. Suits are made overseas and they are making short cuts so they are not has high quality as they used to be. Upper Management makes everyone call customers for all major sales. No one wants to be called at their home or office when they are already receiving continuous emails and postcards. Customer Complaints are held against the Store Manager, not the employee that caused the problem or to the unreasonable customer. You are expected to take back dirty old merchandise (that you need gloves to pick up), that has obviously been worn for many years. Or there is that customer that wears it once and returns it back to the store. Then there are the shoplifters that know you can't do anything to them, so they rob you blind and wave at you as they leave the store. You are always ridiculed by the RSD. You are never doing good enough. You'll be lucky to survive here for a year in this position. This business rates "zero" stars!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire some contemporaries to run the company to freshen up the company! The men out there want to wear suits that are currently in style, not suits with a cut from 10 or even 20 years ago. The tailored fit suits are making some headway towards that goal, but you still don't quite have "it" yet.
