I have been working at JoS. A. Bank part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Manager was very lenient to accommodate my schedule, makes the best of friends, good way to build clientele and resources for other opportunities.

Cons

Company does not recognizes the employees as hard workers, must sell high in order to be paid well, in-store employees being abused by customers while corporate employees deal with a less angered customer, Absurdly long hours during the holidays, corporate team continues to add new ways of doing business when employees are trying to figure out the last way of sales practice.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please listen to the employees. They are in the stores every single day dealing with unhappy customers and being paid so little does not help an employee stay positive. Slow down on the inventory, the stores that are smaller are receiving complaints from the customers about the lack of space in the environment. Employees that are able to do more than just sell like tuxedo rental, tailoring, etc., should be recognized and paid evenly as if they were only selling.

    Pros

The best thing about this company is the freedom it gives it's sales associates. It's not hard to sell the clothe if you know the product info and the current promotions. The benefits are great if you work in a union store but I can't speak on the non union stores. I sell around 8k a week in NY and have made many connections with all types of clients. You automatically get 3% of anything you sell then 4-7% after you hit certain benchmarks and they are very obtainable. They run contests all the time so about once every 2 months you can get up to $200 visa gift cards for pushing certain products. All in all an excellent place to learn how to sell and not just give customers what they want.

    Cons

When there is no advertising business is VERY slow. Also since they have a customer satisfaction guarantee you'll find yourself dealing with headache after headache because some old man with a hunchback doesn't like how his suit fits after alterations. Or people trying to return/replace clothing that they obviously have had for years. Also tuxedo rentals are probably the worst experience you will have while working there. Bridezillas will blame the sales person for things that we cannot control and even complain to corporate. Never promise anything while doing tuxedo rentals and always suggest buying a suit or tux instead of renting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time educating staff on the product itself. Do away with the tuxedo rental side of the business there's way to many problems with it. Also talk to the little people, motivated employees are more useful.
