I worked at John Hancock full-time for more than a year

Pros

Honestly, my department, which was in finance, had its faults but was the best in its class. A lot of great people to work with and learn from. My department strongly advocated and paid for technical development - most companies talk a lot about skill development, but few are as willing as JH to invest as much time and money into it. The department was constantly growing (despite recurring rounds of lay offs). Six weeks of PTO.

Cons

There wasn't a lot of guidance or structure around how to move up in the company. There were regular lay offs that was rattling the nerves of the team; at the same time, a lot of open positions. Generally, anyone who disagreed with or expressed a concern with management struggled in the environment thereafter, and were eventually pushed out. This was a little odd as it was often the highest performers that spoke out.

Expensive cafe. The facilities are in a pricey area. There's not much to do outside the building.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at John Hancock full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Collegial environment, where people are fired up to make some money, and have fun.

    Cons

Cliquey, culty, culture. Management making decisions based on traditions as opposed to what is really fitting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look outside your little shells and make some real grownup decisions instead of micro managing us to death.
