I have been working at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Its difficult to rate the lab as a whole, because of the relatively large differences between departments. Within the force projection department there is significant room and opportunity to have large impact on very important projects. The problems are interesting, the department does not pigeon hole employees, and your work is valued.
Perhaps the biggest pro is that a large fraction of our work is in trusted agent roles. You do not have to behave like a dirty contractor.

    Cons

The lab has a fairly flat pay scale and you could most likely make 10-20% more by shifting laterally into a similar job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop pretending our salaries are competitive.
