I have been working at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

APL has very interesting and important work, a great atmosphere, and a highly committed staff who belive strongly in their work and enjoy their fellow employees.

Cons

The organization is a bit too stove piped and communications both vertically and horizontally are not as efficient as they should be.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management has overly emphasized cost containment for the past 4 years and it has gotten to the point where it has begun to affect staff morale. A bit more balance is needed .

I worked at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory full-time

    Pros

good benefits but often not very good work. People dress nice. cafeteria food is pretty good

    Cons

managers are disrespectful to employees. Very resistant to change. APL culture is more like an elitist caste system than democratic like you might expect in America.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

recognize you are there to serve employees not bully them

I have been working at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

JHU-APL does groundbreaking work in many disciplines, and I met a number of brilliant and passionate workers while working there. Beautiful campus with a great cafeteria, gym, walking paths, etc.

    Cons

Sometimes, the environment can be a little serious and more uptight than necessary. Atmosphere could be more vibrant, less dry, but that might be the serious nature of the work and research being undertaken.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The way some departments are organized aren't optimally conducive to cooperation. To work on an individual project it must be sponsored by a private grant.
