    I have been working at Johns Hopkins University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Good infra-structure and office management support. There are bright people, but little support for young scientists. You are on your own, and need to go somewhere else if you want a permanent position.

    Cons

    No job security since many research positions are based on research grants. This could be different in medical school campus where some money comes from clinical revenue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Environment is catered toward tenured professors. Teaching by some dispassionate professors is often dismal with less than 25% class attendance. If you have a research position, there is no job security and you need to provide 100% of your salary plus overhead cost from your grants.

    Pros

    *JHU Culture
    *Access to education benefits for staff and their college age children
    *Discounts available to JHU employees (YMCA, Weight Watchers, Amusement Parks etc)
    *Benefits package
    *Excellent worklife program for working parents and for staff (Housebuying incentives, adoption assistance benefit, child care etc)
    *Ability to advance to other positions throughout the JHU network. JHU jobs website on any given day has at least 400 jobs opening posted and open to apply for.
    *Living Wage initiative for employees. Custodians average starting salary is about $11 per hour

    Cons

    * JHU Culture
    *University contribution to 403B program for support staff is 20 cents on the dollars
    *Poor training program in place to train employees on SAP (new HR/Payroll/Finance software program) introduced 5 years ago. Training class are available but exisiting employees and new hires aren't encouraged by the departments they work for to learn how to use SAP. JHU spent millions of dollars to purchase to this software.
    *Decentralized organization, which affects how the University operates and how policies are perceived and executed.
    *Salaries for support staff positions are not in line with private employers for the similar jobs.
    *New P3 Evaluation System for employees, which is being used by some departments (HR Shared Services) to ensure that employee's never receive more than an average rating for their review. Average reviews equate to less money in your paycheck. New system put into place in July 2011. Departments are required to use this system, but most aren't taking it seriously.
    *Favoritism - Who you know at JHU can help or hurt your career goals at Hopkins. Never burn any bridges because it is high probability that you will run into that person again during your climb up the career ladder.
    *Elistist Behavior on the department level regarding your educational background
    * Yearly Raises avearge 2% for support staff and Sr Staff and Upper Manager 4%-5%

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Encourage, inspire,motivate, respect and appreicate your employees and the work that they do, instead of belittling, encouraging favoritism, showing little loyalty to employees who are the foundation and back bone of the University. Univeristy needs to offer competitive salaries to attract quality employees and offer higher raises and incentives to long term employees who are leaving JHU to work for other employers. Long term empoyees take knowledge and experience with them out the door.
