I have been working at Johns Hopkins University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good infra-structure and office management support. There are bright people, but little support for young scientists. You are on your own, and need to go somewhere else if you want a permanent position.

    Cons

No job security since many research positions are based on research grants. This could be different in medical school campus where some money comes from clinical revenue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Environment is catered toward tenured professors. Teaching by some dispassionate professors is often dismal with less than 25% class attendance. If you have a research position, there is no job security and you need to provide 100% of your salary plus overhead cost from your grants.

    Mediocrity is Job Number One

I have been working at Johns Hopkins University

    Pros

Great benefits package, but salaries are far too low to retain competent staff, at least in IT. The work environment is pleasant, and there are some good people to work with, and the campus environment is nice.

    Cons

Senior management seem more interested in vendor kickbacks than maintaining reliable infrastructure or, god forbid, innovate. The Peter Principle is definitely at work here, and it shows. I once considered sending a fruit basket or flowers to a co-worker just because I was so delighted someone was actually competent at their job. Then I realized how crazy it is to be amazed by such an occurrence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of these cozy (unethical?) vendor relationships, invest in innovation, show some real leadership, and actually start to take retaining competent staff seriously. JHU hemorrhages talent and replaces it with comfortable mediocrity.
