I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Very deep support for empolyees;
Safety concerns at all levels;
Well funded programs;
High value brand

Cons

Profits above people was expressly communicated by managers;
Unreasonable Profit margin expectations in down economy

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the revolving door. Remove layers of managers rather than field workers who made this company into its current state through hard work and customer focus.

Never again state in a staff meeting that while we know that times are tough out there, "but we still have quoteas to hit no matter what."

    I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good, cheap benefits
    Good opportunity for advancement
    People are generally very nice
    Corporate focus is on ethics, security and sales.

    Cons

    typical large public company, with focus on quarterly sales
    Not sure if it's a con: growth is generally by acquisition
    Non-mainstream business units get ignored for the most part
    Not as much focus on the customer as there should be

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Being a public company, internal change can be slow. Trust that your employees want to do right by the customer. Often what holds them back is policies that management has made.

    I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    There is not a whole lot of good things about Johnson Controls. I have been there 20 years, so I guess it's fairly secure as long as you have seniority and work in a union shop.

    Cons

    Long hours, 12 hour days not unusual. Benefits suck. No chance to move up. Employees are treated as if they are stupid. No chance to use your brain, they don't believe in "thinking" employees. Plants are heavily micro- managed from corporate in Milwaukee, WI.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    My advice to management would be to replace all local management team at the Sycamore, IL facility. They are destroying the plant/profit margin of this facility.
