I worked at Johnson County Community College part-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

The faculty is composed of interesting people from various backgrounds. It is great to work with a diverse student body as well--varying in age and ethnicity. Many of the departments are great to work for.

Cons

It is hard to become a full-time faculty member if you start as part-time. Few positions open up, and the preference is to bring people from outside.

I have been working at Johnson County Community College full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits including health, savings, and accumulative vacation time.

    Cons

No merit based pay raise or acknowledgement. Salary is established by job description and title, and then averaged with other salaries that similar at other colleges. If you have a job title or description that is vague and not accurate, pay does not seem fair. The college only reviews job descriptions every three years. So, the likelihood of receiving appropriate pay for a position that most likely has evolved is low.
In order to promote your position within the college, you have to wait for another position to open. This rarely happens because there are many lifetime employees who will work until retirement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enact some kind of merit based pay reinforcement, or many employees will be content to apply minimum effort.

I have been working at Johnson County Community College full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The college has a great attitude, you really feel like you make a difference, and the benefits are great.

    Cons

The state has suddenly swung ultra conservative and is cutting back on funding for all higher ed, so long term outlook is uncertain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide some pathway to promotions for long term employees who need it. You can't supervise if you haven't supervised in some positions, and there's no way to supervise.
