Marketing is reacting, rather than driving the market. Trying to determine their identity - what they want to be.

    Pros

    1. Executive Managment: The CEO is an intelligent, innovative, energetic and passionate leader. He is charismatic and inspirational. He truly believes in what Jostens is doing and the difference they can make. He is committed to the Jostens Mission which is "Your (the customers) Mission is Our Mission." And, at the quarterly meetings, you cannot help but get excited about and believe in Jostens. At the Executive Management level, Jostens is well positioned and in great hands!
    2. What Jostens Does. Jostens helps students (HS and College), Teams, and Champions recognize and celebrate the accomplishments for which they have worked and to which they have committed themselves.
    3. The Employees. Jostens employs a great group of people who care about each other, about what they do, about the customers and about making a difference.

    Cons

Again, Marketing is currently in a state of flux. They are reacting to the marketplace and the economy, rather than defining the market as the leader they are. In my experience, there is a pattern to this reactive nature.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Define who the Marketing Group is. Establish your identity, your brand. Create a plan that you all believe and then execute the plan and work the plan. And, give the plan some time to see test and prove your strategy. You have great people, resources and an honorable mission and vision. Believe in them, believe in yourself, and make it happen - you can do it!
    2. Reconsider the "lean & mean" approach. The few people you have in Middle Management are giving their all, putting in crazy hours. They are going to burn out which will cost more (financially and culturally) than sufficient staff for the tasks at hand. Your investment in talent (human resources) will drive results, ROI and yield a healthy, happy, productive and satisfied (fulfilled) team.
