Pros

Great co-workers
Great product s
Company enthusiastically embraces technology and innovation
Good benefits package

Cons

Not enough work/life balance
Compensation is inadequate among rank-and-file employees and contractors
Long-time contractors are rarely converted to staff; this undervalues their extensive contributions and value to the company

Advice to ManagementAdvice

In the past 6 months, 9 employees have voluntarily left one department. Allowing this to happen and not investigating the root causes of this exodus are very expensive mistakes. The 9 employees who left the department took with them many years of experience plus unique skills and innate product knowledge that cannot be replicated in the new hires brought on board to replace them. Pay close attention to what employees say in their exit interviews and act on the common factors.

Great product, great people, bad management

    Pros

Lots of great people work at K12 and the company's mission is admirable. The work is interesting, and you always know you are helping kids learn (which is a big plus).

    Cons

Management has no regard for the rank and file. The upper management continues to make tens of millions, while most employees are given little respect or information.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show the employees you actually value them. Share strategies, find ways to give employees skin in the game, and use a 50/50 bonus system that rewards everyone for hitting both individual and company goals.

    Great mission, lousy management

    Pros

K12 provides the ability to work from home with fairly flexible schedules. The work is very interesting with some very top notch subject matter experts.

    Cons

Senior and Executive management do not realize or appreciate that the greatest asset at K12 is its people. These folks are making millions off K12 but are not rewarding the people who helped make it happen. Several folks have been there from the beginning and all they got after 10 years of dedication to the company was a lousy jersey with their name on it and the number 10. There is no opportunity for advancement and salaries are well below market value.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ron, start recognizing your greatest assets at K12. Pay your people what they are worth, clean up your management team, and stop micromanaging operations at K12.
