Pros

The culture of play is unmatched elsewhere and the opportunity to lead people and volunteers across the country is something very valuable.

Cons

Travel during my tenure was relatively vigorous and this challenged the work-life balance. However, working with this particular traveling team of project managers made even the post-project work-life fun.

Perfect job for a psychology major. Come for the mission, stay for the megalomania!

    Pros

The 5 stars are for the people I worked with. 5 stars for the playgrounds. 5 stars for the kids.

    Cons

As pointed out by so many others, staff is treated as disposable. It is starting to dawn on people that this is the purposeful modus operandi, not just an accidental by-product of KaBOOM!'s legendary ham-fisted management. Also mentioned by others, turn-over here happens because of burn-out, true, and because people leave for higher paying jobs, also a fact. But management has long been very well aware those are the reasons people leave and does nothing to stop it. Staff is now coming to the undeniable conclusion that the unending turn-over is by grand design: Bring in an unending supply of fresh faced and earnest staff conned into working ridiculous hours for next to no money in the name of "the mission", then when they have had every shred of enthusiasm ripped from their hearts and souls, say goodbye and bring in the next naïve batch of worker drones. In addition to the financial advantage to KaBOOM!'s in bringing in a new group of cheap labor every few months rather then pay, train or retain the staff they have, there is yet another very important advantage to keeping their revolving door greased up and in motion: people to blame for the ongoing failures and clumsy, inept mis-steps of the CEO and his weak executive team of yes-people who have exponentialized the mission to the point where successful execution is attainable only in the self-aggrandizing fantasies of the President, COO and CEO.

    Advice to Management

“Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others.”
