I have been working at Kaplan University full-time (more than a year)

Pros

It's nice to say you help put people in college for a living. After awhile, you'll know a little bit about a ton of different careers. The people are really nice. Benefits are good, pay is ok. Good starting job for a younger professional.

Cons

Kaplan used to be a fun, energetic place to work with the ability to grow monetarily based on sales (enrolling students). People were making money and life was good. Unfortunately that's no longer the case. Ever since for-profit schools like Kaplan and its competitors have had to reform their business model because of sketchy recruiting practices, its just become a place to collect a paycheck, with no ability to grow within the company--especially financially--yet it is still a hardcore sales job. In a true sales job, you are compensated for the business you bring in. Not at Kaplan. What's worse is that you are still expected to produce at a level that back in the day would have made you, at minium, a 65k/year sales rep.

Some managers are nice, but many of them are not qualified to be in their positions. For example, there are individuals in senior management that do not possess a college degree, yet are being compensated very well (110,000k + salaries) especially compared to regular sales reps. This is particularly stunning considering that to even have an interview to work at Kaplan one must have a Bachelor's degree.

    Pros

Great training program but long, 3 weeks long and very detailed. When you hit the sales floor many of the things you learned in the training class didn't match up with the various floor managers way of doing things. But the Ass. Director was quick to let you know how he wants things done.

    Cons

The overall culture consisted of reverse racism. If you are not Black or Hispanic then your chances of a promotion as close to none. There was a lot of internal pettiness and one step out of line could have you setting in an "interrogation" type of interview with 3 to 4 managers demanding you confess your crime. Which anyone could say something negative about you, without giving their name. In this high pressure sales positions you need to watch your back. Not a place I would recommend working do to the lack of stability within the company and the hostile working conditions. This company laid off about the interior Financial Aid team and closed down multiple teams ( 20+ people per team) one day. The next day they had a champagne toast for not getting laid off with the promise no one else would be laid off. Then later walked 25 more people out the front door with security.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lose the "Cop" attitude unless of course your in the wrong career field. Your employees are not criminals but instead just everyday people who want to do their job and do it well. Really a sad place to work do to the constant fear of being fired even when your preforming above the required monthly enrollments.

I worked at Kaplan University part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Not much in the positive to say. There were some excellent teachers who genuinely wanted to educate the students.

    Cons

Everything bad you hear about for-profit schools are true. Classrooms with not enough or the right equipment, books showing up weeks after a class begins, outdated or broken learning materials, admitting students who are unable to pay or admit students who should not be there. There were students who could not do basic math, students who could barely read or write, students who were there because a judge ordered them to go to school or they would have to go to jail. Constant mandatory meetings that were unpaid.

The list could go on and on and on...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus less on profits and more on quality classrooms and students.
