Former Employee - Admissions Advisor II in Fort Lauderdale, FL

I worked at Kaplan University full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Benefits on first day and free tuition. The best decision upper management ever made was firing my former manager in July 2012. He was the worst and most unhelpful manager I have ever encountered, yet had a huge ego. Upper management finally realized to fire him based on performance and that they shouldn't keep him based on where he was from. That same manager didn't even have a degree, yet his admissioins advisors were expected to have at least a bachelors.

Cons

Management constantly talks down to their employees and everyone is treated like a number. Job is a very low level inside sales job. You need to hit a certain quota every month which constantly changes and if you don't and your not one of managements favorites your fired. Some people are given good leads and some are assigned poor leads, your success will be determined by how much managers like you. Some admissions advisors job roles were changed back in July to
just simply answering the phone with no sales goals. They kept the same pay but had job security because how can you screw up answering the phone. Although many of these phone receptionists quit out of boredom. Constant layoffs and a feeling that you could get fired any day.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees better and to reward employees based on performance. Promotions should be based on job performance and not what country someone is from.

I worked at Kaplan University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Average wages for the work performed. Typically 40-45 hour work weeks on a M-F schedule, so they aren't driving you toward burnout.

    Cons

Morale is low due to the multiple rounds of layoffs. Politics prevent bad projects from being terminated early and retasking people and $$ to better options. A lot of pressure for the sales staff/admissions. One's supervisor has a lot to do with one's success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction, stick with it and provide the right resources and time to see if things are working. Interdepartment cooperation is poor. Leadership needs to take a more active role in ensuring collaboration happens in a healthy way.
