It's not about the Student, it's about the Numbers

I have been working at Kaplan University

Pros

There is the opportunity to make upwards of 6 figures. However of the 1500-2000 admissions advisors there are less than 10 in the company. Benefits from day 1 and the opportunity to take apart of the Gift of Knowledge which is free education after 30 days. This includes the Masters program if you have a bachelors already.

Cons

It's a numbers game. Pressure tactics to enroll students. Encouraged to come in on your day off if you are behind in your numbers otherwise your job will be on the line. Micro managed on every thing you do. Strict adherence to breaks and given lunch times. Favoritism in promotions and no clear path on how to move up. If you boss likes you than you are given a shot.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge that sometimes the best potential managers are not necessarily the best producers and vice versa the best poducers some times make the worst managers. Be fair and if hold up your promises to you staff that have managed to stay around longer than a few months.

Good place to work only if you can sell

    I worked at Kaplan University

    Pros

Kaplan university is a nice environment to work. Everyone at the work place is super nice and very helpful. The management is very flexible about schedule and time off as long as you can produce as in sell education.

    Cons

Kaplan university is a revolving door, they are always hiring and always firing. When they hire you they give you a three month time period to make a minimum number of sales and if you can not cut it they will fire you after three months. As such it is not uncommon to see your whole team get fired and you get left with new hires. The recruiters tell you that if you can not sell they will shift you over to a different position but that is a lie and you will be fired if the numbers are not met.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating people like they are so replaceable. You are taking advantage of a down economy which lets you hire and fire people at will but once the economy turns up your ways are over with.

Great place to work, if you can't find anywhere else.

I have been working at Kaplan University

    Pros

The best reason to work at Kaplan is that they will actually hire you. They hire EVERYONE. They give you a shot for about 3 months and you either make it or you don't. If you're struggling to find a job in sales, they'll give you a salary while you look for something else.

    Cons

They bill it as a sales job, but you get none of the benefits of being in sales. i.e. commission, time off when you want, freedom to work independently. You DO however get to put up with cheesy sales floor tactics - rah rah meetings everyday, pointless "games" with no spiffs attached, daily pressure from management. - not a sales job, just a holding pattern. Also, if you are looking to move in to management, you better come in as such. Over 90% of management is brought in from outside sources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We don't need to have huddles every day. Nothing changes. Once a week will suffice. It just looks like grandstanding and it takes people away from their jobs.
