Current Employee - Warehouse Supervisor in Fredericton, NB (Canada)

I have been working at Kaycan full-time (less than an year)

Pros

If you want to be in a role that is very challenging both physically and metally this is the career for you. Not much down time, there is always something to do within the warehouse. Customer's are first, so there is a big customer care component. You have to have great communication within the company and on a weekly basis are responsible for temp workers who have to work hard and fast to empty a full trailer load of stock in an 8 to 4 day. Must be able to prioritize, delagate, and multi-task with excellent physical stamina and dexterity. Average unit of siding that you will lift will be 80lbs and carry it on your shoulder from one end of the warehouse to the customer's vehicle. Sometimes contractors will come in looking for 10 to 15 units or more, and if there is more than a few customers in at a time, you will have to do the orders very quickly. Not a job for someone who is afraid of hard work. Staff when I was there were all very nice and pleasant people to work with. It's a small group and very friendly, everyone is on a personal basis. Current manager is very easy to get along with, and pretty forgiving on some things, however expectations are demanding as you are dealing mostly with contractors who demand fast loading turn arounds. Anyone who has labour, construction, warehousing with some element of supervisory under their belt from past positions would be a good fit for this position.

Cons

Some days, can be very overwhelming with deadlines for customers, orders to ship and unloading trailers if all come on the same day. Can be a high pressure environment one day, and slow the next. I did not work through the peak season, I was employed during the slow part of the season and not so much the physical side of it, but did find the learning curve for knowing the product and product location to be a bit longer than in past positions I have had. Days can sometimes run over the average 8 to 5 workday. You have to be prepared to do what it takes to get the work done and on a weekly basis run over 5pm. If you're not physically fit (ability to lift heavy weights on your shoulders all day long) or have poor cardio (everyday be prepared to sweat) or expect to just make a paycheque for showing up, this is not the job for you.

    Pros

Good, quality product. Good balance between work and family.

    Cons

management does not work well with field. Montreal office dictates everything, even if something won't work in your market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the field people do their jobs, not so much micro-management
