I have been working at Kiewit Corporation

    Pros

There is an uplift applied to the salary of staff which is among the most competitive percentages for Alberta

    Cons

Depending on the location of the discipline, staff may work many free hours due to a supervisor saying others are doing it, therefore you should work 3 additional hours a day for free.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Making employees feel like they need to work more than what they are paid for is not a good way to keep people.

    Pros

    Great benefits package.
    Lobby is super nice.

    Cons

If you like revisiting the 1990s from a technology perspective, this is the place for you. You constantly get the feeling that this company is playing catch up to its competitors...while having something very heavy strapped to its back. As a professional, don't expect to gain anything from this job. In fact, I believe the longer you stay, the more you're screwing yourself because your peers will continue to learn about new technologies, while you spend your time buried under a pile of rotting wood.

As for people that are not in IT, the admins are great, but don't expect to get anything of value from any of the engineers. Some of them are too busy admiring themselves in the mirror to hear anything else. Here's a tip, hotshot: computers are not magic boxes. They require work, and they require people like us to help out people like you. And, by the way they behave around computers, you would think that all of the more educated folks think computers are full of spirits and need a Shaman and voodoo dance to make them work. For a bunch of smart people, it is amazing how incredibly obtuse they are when it comes to technology.

As for the company as a whole, they partner with some of the biggest software and hardware companies, and this isn't doing them any favors. But, like all the other antiquated notions of this giant corporate machine, marriage to some of the oldest, and crappiest, software and hardware providers must seem like a good idea. Heaven forbid they get ahead of the curve. Instead, they rather trail the curve and complain about it the whole way. For the amount of money they spend on these projects, you'd think they could throw a few bucks towards reliable technology (and resources).

And finally, to echo the sentiments of others, don't ever think about moving up here unless you wish to have a permanently stained nose. However, if you enjoy affixing your lips to areas that most people avoid, you will surely climb the ladder quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Oracle, Dell, and Microsoft are not the only players in the world of technology
