I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Ability to have your voice heard, even if you're fresh out of school.
Above-average amount of responsibility put on new members willing to take on a challenge.
Excellent avenues for collaboration enhancing your ability to build a strong intracompany network.

Cons

Team members aren't necessarily rewarded for the challenges they take on.
Promotions are based heavily on seniority.
Can at times have an environment that is competitive to a fault within the company.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Although cross-training is preached, it is rarely practiced. A few HR functions could enhance this:
1) Create a consistent, current org chart.
2) Career postings within the organization should convey who the hiring manager actually is.

    I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Excellent safety culture when it comes to self performed work, Kiewit has a long history of success, you will learn a lot in a short period of time because the amount of work hours you will put in will teach you a lot. Great internship program that pays very well and interns will get more perks than most employees (just be aware most of the perks go away when you go full time). You will move up in the company as long as you have the years of service. Very stable company and it is almost imposible to get fired or laid off, because the company is very afraid of letting people go. Having 2 or 3+ years at Kiewit on your resume gives you instant credibility, and other companies like hiring former Kiewit employees.

    Cons

    After 4 years at the company I have heard just about everyone say the work-life balance is bad, and that is because it is bad. You will be able to take on as much responsibility as possible and they will let you but be aware as you take on new responsibilities you are generally still responsible for your current responsibilities (it just keeps adding up). Most low margin jobs will be understaffed so set your work limits or you will be working 6 or 7 days a week and will easily hit 80-100 hours a week when the jobsite has issues. Do not expect to make more than $7 to $15 an hour out of college when you calculate your salary to hours worked. It is very possible you will make more as an intern that a full time employee with a college degree.

    I heard the 2012 year for stock holders was the worst in company history, so know it seems times could be rough for the company in the near term (KieCore has been blamed but the corporate overhead is out of control).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Reward the top performers (that do 80% of the work) and weed out the bottom performers (that do 20% of the work). When an estimate is blown at the begining and you make cuts by understaffing the job it is very likely to be even less profitable than it would be if staffed properly from the start. Many people will get discouraged as they relize becoming a stock holder now takes 5-10 years in some districts vs 3-5 in other districts. As more and more construction companies start paying salaried emplyees overtime, there needs to be a plan to not lose good employees to those companies or start paying overtime at a fair rate.
