I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, mobility is there for young person who wants to move around, and plenty of work available

    Cons

Upper management expects you to work 14-16 hr days 6 days a week without any comp time or overtime. Then if you need time off for a dr. appt. they will dock your pay. Training is pathetic at least in my case they bring you in and jump down your throat if you don't catch on right away HR dept is non existent !

    Advice to Management

You need to look at how things operate at lower levels to try and stop the unethical work practices that are being allowed by middle mangement

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time

    Pros

Some of the people are very friendly and most are good friends outside of work. The pay is competitive, the health plan good, and the training is excellent. The work in the office is interesting and there is a lot of enthusiasm for new bids. The construction work is always done to the best ability within budget and the company has a good reputation of not firing people when times get tough. The company has a nice long-standing history.

    Cons

It is very hard to please everyone. Position lines blur and the work gets handed off through the chain of command, with the managers doing little if any of their work. None of these men and women are responsible enough to talk to each other about dead lines or conflicting assignments. This leaves everyone scrambling to finish as planned. The informality within the company leaves much to be desired. Gossip runs rampant among the employees which leaves the team morale low. The atmosphere is uncomfortably informal to the point of superiors openly disrespect upper management in front of co-workers and new hires. Work becomes a place where one sits and listens to the mickey-mouse happenings of personal vendettas within the company. Lack of work/life balance. Most employees in good standing with management work a good 20 hrs a week longer than their required hours simply because that is the expectation. These people get no compensation for the extra time they spend away from family on the weekends. As for on-site jobs, sometimes the workers are kept pulling hours far over the recommended limits. It is very unsafe for engineers and laborers alike to be tired on the job because they aren't allowed to go home and get sleep. The amount of turn-over from burn-out is high, and most of the employees are young! Families up and move often, which is somewhat expected in the work, but it is handled poorly. People are not given enough notice to properly detach from their homes and relocate. This is common among the young engineers who get little notice before being expected to ship off, often only months apart.

    Advice to Management

    - Open Communication with deadlines and work loads so that the work is distributed properly. - Focus on training employees about the importance of morale and team bonding. Those employees ought to respect each other since they have to work together whether they like it or not. - Work on notifying work locations as soon as possible to ease the transition. - Openly discourage employees for working on the weekends to break the negative stigma towards those who want a work life balance. It is unethical to work talented people till they crack and are force to transfer companies in pursuit of having a life. - Reward those who work overtime with bonuses so that they get compensated for working over 40 hrs a week. If the company can't make this compensation, lock down the home offices entirely on weekends. It is unethical to continue this overworking practice, and all the good talent will leave the company this way.
