Pros

Great projects and exposure to all facets of the consulting business. It is a great learning experience in the early years of your career

Cons

Long Hours, politics associated with advancement (it helps to suck up and "play the game"), salary compensation not in line with the hours worked, very few opportunities to advance for employees who do not follow the prescribed path; high divorce rate which is likely a result of the long hours and demanding schedule, overall poor work life balance, almost impossible for women who want to juggle a family and a career; less than stellar health benefits

    Opportunity to work on variety of projects and develop technical skills. Business model breaks down when economy slows.

    I have been working at Kimley-Horn and Associates

    Pros

    Good opportunities to develop technical skills, variety of interesting projects.
    Bonuses and 401(k) benefits are better than I've seen anywhere else.
    Generally lots of good production people around the firm.

    Cons

    Very demanding atmosphere, goal-driven above all else.
    Corporate culture has declined a ton in last five years, with economic challenges. Morale among employees is very low, layoffs are frequent and wide-ranging.
    Tough to acheive decent work-life balance when eveyone is focused on billable hours to avoid losing their job.
    Loyalty to employees is non-existent - if numbers don't meet expectations quarter to quarter or month to month, they'll toss you out whether you've been there 10 months or 10 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on the culture and people - KHA used to be a great firm, but you're losing a lot of good long-term people through layoffs, resignations, etc. Soon, KHA will be past the tipping point (if not already). It's no mystery why KHA is no longer on the Fortune Top 100 places to work - the culture has declined immensely.
