A stepping stone at best - a cautionary tale for most of us

I have been working at Kinder Morgan

Pros

- Growth company with significant assets
- From the outside, company looks like a good team to join
- Money is decent. Beats unemployment

Cons

- Micromanagement on a level that I thought was only in fiction before working here.
- Culture of fear, CYA, and excuse making. The first order of business is always to deflect blame.
- Zero chance for advancement if you have skills. Skills and vision scare them
- Rampant nepotism
- Comically bad HR/IT/training/internal systems. The management does not care, and it shows. When questioned, they will ADMIT that they don't care, saying "people are lined up to work here". Not for long.
- Promotions and management roles are given (not earned), and go to people who won't make waves or question management. There is no consideration of skill/ability/education. A "yes man" lacking abilition, curiosity, or willingness to grow the position is the perfect candidate for a long management career in KM Terminals.
- CHEAP approach to *everything*, unless you are in the good ol' boys club

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enjoy the record profits, because with your long-term approach to business, it won't last.

I have been working at Kinder Morgan

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Steady work
    Good safety program

    Cons

    Below industry average for pay
    Incompetent management
    Nepotism
Managers seem to be set on demeaning and trying to make their better employees look bad to take the spotlight off the fact that they have no clue or ambition to do their job; when usually that employee is more qualified to do their job. This is perpetuated by the fact that upper management is totally lacking in their job duties. It almost seems that they are " covering" each others backs. There is almost no onsite supervision from managers on up the chain of command. As long as the manager pencil whips his paperwork on the computer and forwards it to the proper people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs better supervision to make sure they are doing their job properly, and more training. Pay scale should be increased to attract better applicants, and to keep the qualified employees we do get.

I have been working at Kinder Morgan

    Pros

Flexible and interesting work, good people and good job security for those who perform well. Company did not layoff a single full time employee during economic downturn and continues to maintain a growing presence in the industry. Competative pay/benefits

    Cons

Constant change and turnover at the middle management level. Low employee morale. OVerworked staff at every level. Mixed messages at multiple levels of management. No training opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more clarity, less general guidance and feedback to employees. Offer training to employees to increase individual value and team productivity.
