Could be worse . . . but could be much better, too.

I have been working at Kindred Healthcare

Pros

If you're in the right department then you don't have anything to worry about. Fortunately, I ended up with a competent manager and senior management in my area. They are willing to let you gain experience even if it is trial by fire at first.

Cons

Corporate culture can be very clique-ish. Too often Senior Management will say one thing and then turn around and do another almost in knee-jerk fashion. Bottom line still drives Kindred. Granted, they are for-profit . . . but there is a distinct disconnect between the corporate center (or Support Center as they so proudly call themselves) and the various medical facilities performing the patient care.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

For the most part, the management tries to do the right thing by the employees. There is a certain clique of higher-ups at the upper senior management level that basically dictate how the company moves forward. If I had any advice, it would be to listen to your employees - all of them - and truly consider their observations, experience, and input.

    Pros

Good opportunity for advancement within, arguably, the country's best chain of LTACHs. Extremely interesting and challenging patients. Also a good opportunity to learn and understand healthcare administration, risk management, healthcare billing & reimbursement, and corporate operations.

    Cons

Average pay and slightly less than average benefits. Senior administration often fails to provide a clear vision and mission and communicates without consistency. Patient outcomes can be mentally and emotionally taxing on even those less sensitive individuals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to improve communication and send a more consistent and unifying message throughout the organization. Improve pay and offer more competitive benefits to attract better people and retain better people.

    Pros

No other jobs around. When one opens up....TAKE IT. tHE CORP PROTECTS THE CORP. You are but a warm body to them (that's if the heat works).

    Cons

As stated in many other posts on other sites. They care about the bottom line only. They have no pblm whatsoever in lying to family and employees to get the top dollar. I have seen residents conned into moving rooms just to be able to put a "private pay" in that room.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that you are in the business of helping people. If you make a jillion bucks, then fine.
