I worked at Koch Industries

Pros

This company had plenty of job opportuties. The actual owner of the company is a very down to earth person.

Cons

Seemed like there were layoffs every couple of years, however this is a pretty normal thing for any company nowadays.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work and stick with the MBM principles

A terrific company, where the sky is the limit -- if you're willing to get better each and every year.

I have been working at Koch Industries

    Pros

The management philosophy is unique. It attempts to take those things that work well in the free market and apply them inside the firm. Things like property rights (decision rights), incentives (pay for performance), and encouraging employees to act like owners and start and grow the business as an entreprepreneur would. Being privately held is a huge competitive advantage because the company does not have to behave as those who fear wall street punishing their stock price if the last 3 mos do not meet financial expectations. This allows the company to look at things over a long term - which is what all boards should be doing but do not.

    Cons

It is a very 'bottom line' company, not that that's a bad thing, but the bar is constantly being raised and this can lead to burn-out. The upside is that if you perform, you really have the opportunity to earn beyond your peers at other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The culture of the company is the greatest competitive advantage I see among its competitors. Too many recent large acquisitions have begun to dilute the culture. Leadership should have a zero tolerance for those who behave counter to the culture that has made the company what it is today.

    I worked at Koch Industries

    Pros

Not afraid to give responsibility, culture is fantastic, commitment to integrity and fairness. Economic thinking is top notch. Great people.

    Cons

Good pay to get in but usually stalls at 4% once you are in the door. Promotions come with minimal to no wage increase.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure pay for performance, one of the five MBM dimensions, is applied the way you see it. In my case, and with others, it was applied subjectively and in small quantities at the year end bonus. Other company's do this better. Promote more from within.
