Former Employee - Customer Service Associate in Rocky Point, NY

I worked at Kohl's part-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Good with flexibility if you are in hs/college and working PT.
Can see clearance items before they get onto the floor.
15% discount; 30% during holidays.

Cons

As is probably the case with most retail - managers care more about making sales/credit application quotas than about associates.

I spent several years at customer service without ever getting promoted to cs on the payroll, despite others hired as cs but working POS getting paid the CS wage.

No loyalty to associates over customers. Have had instances where customer completely berated and insulted me in front of the manager and (despite the customer returning something that had clearly been stolen) the manager said nothing to the customer and even went out of his way to refund the item against store policy.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your associates who have been there for years and do a good job otherwise you will lose them.

    Pros

    Employee discount
Paid vacation time after 1 yr

    Cons

Little training given when getting cross-trained
Schedules are very unreliable. One week you will have 16 hours, the next you will have 0.
Harassing customers to sign up for charge card.
Minimum wage for working all day, past midnight or one a.m, sometimes literally cleaning up someone's poop/vomit in changing rooms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Associates are not slaves, therefore you should not treat them as such. I really dislike how the managers seem to really play the "favorites" card. If they like you, you will LOVE your job at Kohl's.
If they don't like you, they will make sure you know it and you will begin to despise your job.

I worked at Kohl's part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Store managers really care about the success of the individual stores and the company as a whole. The other employees are hard working and friendly. Community service opportunities are nice, and the schedule was very flexible. All of the policies for employees are very fair (regarding tardiness, attendance, etc...)

    Cons

Customer service policies make customers think that they can be rude, lie, cheat, and steal, and that customer service associates must still bend over backwards to make them happy. Management will not support their employees in holding up company policy, which makes the customers think employees are uninformed/rude/incompetent. Customers were consistently disrespectful and rude, and management rarely defends the associates dealing with these situations, nor empowers them enough to defend themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not bend policies for customers; it teaches them to disrespect associates and demand to speak to a manager whenever they want a discount. Find a happy medium between asking customers for respect and offering to bend over backwards even when they lie and steal.
