I worked at Kohl's

Pros

Was able to strengthen skills in order to move to a better future. Pay, benefits was okay.

Cons

Management and high up people tend to think they run everything and look and talk down to workers. Too much finger pointing and throwing people under the bus. No on takes responsibility for their actions unless it is something good. Promotions are made not by experience or hard work but who you go to lunch with and kiss up too.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house, start at the top. VP's, Directors, Managers. Too many chiefs making decisions and fighting to have their way (OSA big finger pointer). No one is concerned about the money spent by late and wrong decisions during development. Last minute changes in the past years has caused thousands of lost dollars and the problem dept is usually the one that doesnt get blamed or take ownership. (OSA, MP, Fixture Development, Planning and Innovation).

I worked at Kohl's part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There was always an opportunity to get assistance from managment. Also, you could get the chance to move from the floor to the register, which is more ideal, especially in a department store. Overall, people are friendly and it is what you make it.

    Cons

Ther were not too many downsides; however, the one thing that had extensive ramifications was scheduling. There were a lot of issues with work schedules and somehow, every week , it never improved. This was very troubling, given that there are only 30-45 employees at the store, which should not be hard to construct schedules for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more organized and read the book, "Seven Habits of Highly Successful Managers"

    Slightly better-than-average retail hell

I worked at Kohl's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

15% employee discount...oh, except you have to sign up for their credit card to get it if you want to buy online or not pay with cash/check at the store. Besides that, some of the other associates are fun to work with. A lot of customers tend to be older ladies who are generally nice and appreciate all the hard work we do.

    Cons

Credit pushing sucks. Every associate is basically required to solicit 1 per day and then management constantly gets on your case to get more. We are also all nagged to sign up for them ourselves (which lowers your credit score, btw). Managers are hit-and-miss; even the nice ones have to enforce corporate's rules which get very tiring. They will occasionally ignore rules and force you to work back-to-back shifts, and have you cover so many other people and work so hard that sometimes it is impossible to take a break (but they will give you one if you demand it of course, it's just very frowned upon to do so). Then there's everything else that comes with retail like awful customers. Kohl's will give ridiculous discounts to people who have been yelling at the cashier and it's just soul-sucking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that associates are people and not robots.
