I have been working at Kohl's

Pros

Able to work around schedule at full time job

Cons

the work is VERY difficult when working with the public. Kohl's does NOT provide an alternative to obtaining your pay stubs other than online. They have really cut my hours in January!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Kohl's needs to provide paper stubs as well as the online stubs. Im in DIRE need of my pay stubs!

I have been working at Kohl's

    Pros

Managing at Kohl's is fun and challenging. The associates for the most part are fun to work with and enjoy their job. The work is diverse and requires creativity and quick decision making. The culture of Kohl's is service oriented and gives you tools to make people happy.

    Cons

It really comes down to the store you are in and the team around you. Seeing several different stores I can say that there are very distinct personalities for stores, and you may or may not find one that fits who you are. If you don't, they are not afraid to run you over. Welcome to retail.

The hours are terrible, and you can never do enough. There is always pressure to come in/stay just a little(lot) longer. A great job lasts until the next sentence coming out of someone's mouth. This is not a job where people pat each other on the back.

People are catty about many things- Credit, workload, food in the break room... That's not exclusive to retail, but often times you are left with the parental duties of separating bickering "children".

If you can work very hard and feel fulfilled through your own work, results and interpersonal relationships, then this may be a good job for you. Also, be sure you don't mind pushing credit credit credit. Often times it will feel like the only metric that truly matters.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is a good and challenging career opportunity for those fresh out of college and those with a passion for retail. Be prepared to work hard every day.

I have been working at Kohl's

    Pros

Fellow associates generally support each other, and make a "positive" environment possible. Schedules are flexible. Numerous locations in urban areas makes it a convenient employment choice.

    Cons

Expectations are unrealistically high. The workload is absurd, and if an employee has prior department store retail experience, is self-motivated, and is a hard worker by nature, the "Cons" are only worse. The workload is uneven as there is always (company-wide,) a limited amount of staffing, and while there may be additional "bodies" on the clock, the work is not delegated to ensure productivity from all. Working conditions makes it feel more like a warehouse job rather than one in a "family-oriented" department store. Extremely cramped working spaces, stockrooms, too much merchandise, equipment to move merchandise, and more, make for a constant hazardous working environment. There are no accolades to any accomplishments...this applies to both what is in your job description, and to what is accomplished above & beyond. Management lacks even the basic level of skill. Company-wide, there appears to be no set standard with regard to Human Resources. Little communication between all levels of management...within a given location and between site to corporate. Often associates are left to "guess" what the procedures of the day (or moment,) are and are constantly at risk for being spoken to in demeaning manners. All in all, working for this company is chaos, and the pay is no where near what it should be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Current company motto "Expect Great Things." That is what the top four Executive Mangement persons at KSS expect. What they do not realise is that without addressing the lack of professionalism from management on a store level, the inability to provide a suitable staffing budget to allow for freight to get to the selling floor, and the lack of Sales Assiciates to help the customer "Expect Great Things," is what leaves merchandise unsold, until all the manpower available has to be diverted to price changes so goods can then come out of stockrooms and be sold at "clearance." Make a choice CEO & Co., and be consistent all the way through...go with the "Vera Wang's, Dana Buchman, Liz Claiborne Comapny's, cross-shopping (finally, retail common sense,) and give the best Customer Service...then go all the way. Have enough Sales Associates who can actually be there to service the customer or continue the way you are...empty shelves, overflowing fitting rooms, broken & old fixtures, and plenty of clearance. If you should choose the former, make sure that associates are compensated properly, and then keep asking them to "smile and say "Hi." Right now it is hard for anyone employed on a store level to grit their teeth, and say "hi" when they probably just got hurt on something and/or had some unprofessional interaction with a member of management. Oh, and did I mention it might be worth the investment to have an outside consulting firm come in and teach management skills, and important HR procedures. The company is so passing up on so much potential.
