Pros

Great people, atmosphere, occasional corporate events, decent benefits, good socializing experience working there.

Cons

Medium-Low pay. Programmers are severely restricted to what they can do on their computers, hampering our ability to work productively. Using outdated technologies, not moving fast enough integrating newer tech. Getting proper utilities to work efficiently is a pain, have to sign a contract with the devil to get authorization to buy Visio - might as well pay it for myself. Non-existant documentation. No developing structure/architecture - develop the way I want, which is good only if the developer is good, if not - the code is messy, not maintainable and chaotic - imagine 10 people writing 10 separate function that you need to stick together into an application... and then imagine those 10 people not talking to each other. Development is slap-and-go - doesn't matter how inefficient your code is - as long as you finish development fast, you are OK (which is wrong IMHO). Overtime is not compensated - officially it is, but you need pre-approval from higher management, CEO or God, which you won't get, but will be asked politely to "You don't <have> to stay, but it has to be done today".

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Push on upgrading technologies. Don't cripple developers by not giving them admin rights on their own PCs (have to ask to start Visual Studio in admin mode, which can take up to 10-15 minutes, depending on person with rights availability). Don't be so greedy and not buying the latest tools and utilities for developers and management - if the manager needs Visio, don't ask for novel of justification reasons. Get some dedicated people to create a proper documentation. The current attempt at generic knowledge base is puny.

    Pros

Great benefits. The group I was hired with were young so we were supported each other through the learning phase. Since we were a young group, we often grabbed a beer or played soccer after work. Depending on your TL, the work is relaxed and some senior programmers are approachable whenever you need help.

    Cons

Pay is low. It takes awhile to move up the corporate ladder. The company is run by family members (most execs are related to the CEO). Better training for new employees.

Great place to work. IT department is a little backwards

    Pros

Fast growing company with a great CEO who genuinely cares about his people and what they think.

Fun, laid back atmosphere. Flex hours, upto 5 week’s vacation, casual dress. Very fun place to work.

Lots of opportunity for advancement. Managers are all friendly and easy to get along with.

    Cons

IT department is resistant to change and disorganized. Can't seem to figure out how to deal with rapid growth.

Still developing with outdated platforms such as VB6 and ASP. No plans to modernize that anyone can see.

Middle and senior management is full of people who have been with the company for ages with dated skill sets, and don't have any real management background. Nice people, just not great managers.

Impossible to find information. Knowledgebase and work tracking system was built in house and sucks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

IT department needs a good shake up, and some outside advice. Look at what others do and copy it, it can't be worse then what your doing.

Hiring practices are poor and need improvement. Need to test technical know how better.

Bring in some outside middle managers with a fresh perspective.
