I have been working at Kyocera Technology Development

Pros

Job security and the basic benefit package is horrible are the only pros

Cons

Lacks respect for there employees. Most Managers are managers because they were there not because of time and not because of they have their innate knowledge. There is no management training and can resemble high school. Many projects suffer because of the lack of knowledge of those in charge. Many great employees come and try to help, but with the level of ignorance and politics many products take much longer and not as good as they could be if managers were better educated and had basic managing skills. Not an equal opportunity employer, it best to be at least male if not then just being Asian will do. Forget about HR department

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Education.... Needs better check and balances to keep managers in check. HR that is there to protect employees not the company only.

    Pros

it gives you the best job security. they never laid off people.

    relatively relaxing work place
    kinda young culture
a lot of paid time off

    Cons

    no flexible hour
    very japanese culture
    unwilling to purchase new equipment
    old technologies
unwilling to try using new technologies

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers should get formal training for management. They usually don't show their manager characters. Managers should be more flexible and willing to change.

    Pros

Benefits, stability and they leave you alone as long as you are doing your job. GM is trying to fix it - but too many managers are so negative that they don't want to be held accountable. The people there are really nice and hard working - but taken advantage of.

    Cons

No career path or promotion opportunities. Most people either are there because they can't find another job or are tied to a visa. It shows in the attitudes. The good engineers leave as soon as they can find another job - even if it means adding an hour commute. Very Japanese mentality of the longer you are at your desk, the more loyal employee your are - regardless if you get any work done. Too many meetings that get absolutely nothing accomplished! Management (GM, HR, IT, some new Department Managers) are more progressive and try to do the right thing, but way too many managers stuck in the "Kyocera way".

Kyocera Philosophy - don't get me started - looks like a prayer book and the videos are horrible - yes, we are required to sit through hours of videos every month preaching the Kyocera Philosophy. Poor HR manager has to facilitate and cringes at all of the potentially discriminatory and taboo subjects.

GM is trying to hold people accountable but some managers are fighting and trying to sabotage his efforts so they don't look bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a decision - are we going to be run like an old-school company or get out of the dark ages and become more western business culture based. There is a fine line between cheap and frugal - and this company comes across as cheap, while "philosophizing" (preaching) being frugal.
