I have been working at L-3 Communications full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The salary is competitive and the people are okay. For all those who must work you could do much worse. Overall I would give the company a 7 on a scale from 1 to 10.

    Cons

To begin with, the hierarchy is ambiguous. I have been here for some time and still unable to get a grasp on the chain of command. It's a big company with a big company feel; you will never get that "warm and fuzzy" feeling. Incompetence is rampant. Many senior people within the division lack the clout to implement effective policies because people more senior to them who work remotely and have no idea what occurs within the division on an everyday basis, implement ineffective and needless time consuming policies. Their benefits package is subpar. PTO is a total of 15 days which includes vacation, personal and sick time. There is also a high turnover rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many divisions lack a solid foundation and a comprehensive structure. That's a liability which will eventually translate into financial loss. I would also advise the CEO to take a closer look at their Senior VP's because many may be qualified to play the part but are just not effective leaders.

    Notorious for quarterly layoffs.

I have been working at L-3 Communications full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

In Northern Virginia - friendly people at the program level. Very flexible with weekly schedules; some telecommuting is allowed in some jobs.

    Cons

Upper management flip-flops on business decisions and sends contradictory messages to the workers. Notorious for quarterly layoffs. No coherent corporate-wide vision or strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating people like interchangeable Legos. Give more control to the program manager to make financial decisions. Stop interfering with small purchases.
