I worked at LA Fitness part-time

Pros

Commissions are really great if you have a supervisor who wants you to get them by helping you load new clear-ups. It is easy to move your minimum wage salary up a few dollars per hour.

It is fun to be at the front desk if you enjoy meeting people and socializing. It's a great opportunity to get to know those in your community.

Cons

Severe lack of formal training. There was no employee handbook and the work can be complex in the computer system.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your front desk people are the face of the company. They need to be WELL-trained in the job, as well in public relations and phone communication to increase your bottom line. Customer service is important, and being short-staffed pissed customers off because they don't want to wait to work out.

I have been working at LA Fitness full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Free membership. Nice customers and employees.

    Cons

No management structure. Improper tracking of sales and commissions. Varying pay scale for trainers depending on the state the gym is located. Lack of proper introduction and instruction to the computer system. Being told that the pay was one thing only to find out it was less. Inability to do simple things properly. More concerned over making a buck then providing the best atmosphere for customers and staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructure how the gym is run with a clear cut manager. Having a Front End Manager, a Sales Manager and a Personal Training Sales/Hiring Manager makes no sense. Each facility should have one person that is in charge of the entire gym. The pay standards for personal trainers should not vary from state to state. They should be paid a flat rate per session and not a percentage of the package a client buys because the trainers are trainers and not sales people. A good quality trainer should not have to do sales. Asking them to do both is ensuring that you will not have trainers with any real interest in training. They will only be concerned with their commission.

I have been working at LA Fitness full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Get to help allot of people with there fitness goals. Most employees are good people.

    Cons

Unfair pay structure. LA Fitness pays you commission or minimum wage, whichever is higher. What they fail to inform you is, to pass minimum wage in a pay period a Sales Counselor has to sell about 30 memberships. An impossible task, that not even the General Manager is able to achieve. After 3 pay periods that you don't achieve this impossible goal, you get fired and they hire a new person in your place. I was there 4 months and I saw 6 different Sales Counselors come and go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Low employee turnover should be a priority.
