I have been working at LAPD

Pros

A job you can be proud of, opportunity to explore hundreds of different jobs within the department, come in contact with people and places you would not normally encounter (usually avoid), great compensation for a job that requires no college degree or specific work skills/experience.

Cons

You have to work many holidays, weekends, and nights (although many people prefer to work at night). Patrol officers are the grunts of the department and more often than not are served the short end of the stick. You start to dread extended family gatherings and seeing old acquaintances because they always want to hear work stories. Department has created an unimaginable volume of paperwork to be completed for routine police work.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline all paperwork, eliminate code-7, allow people to test for sergeant without college credit.

I have been working at LAPD

    Pros

Great career opportunities. Recognition by peers, the community and command staff. Although their is a risk of sustaining physical harm, the benefits of the job far outweigh the risks. Every dat is different. Once you're in the police car you could respond to almost anything. From robberies in progress to homicides, you will experience the "worst" Los Angeles has to offer. A must job for someone looking for a little excitement. I enjoy it very much and highly recommend it.

    Cons

There is a possibilty that you could be injured or killed. If you fail to follow policy, you could be suspended without pay, terminated or prosecuted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To provide line offices more support in light of the risks inherent with the job.

I have been working at LAPD

    Pros

Opportunities for advancement, good pay, helpful people. Enjoyed having a different job everyday and helping the community and the public.

    Cons

It was a long commute. Sometimes the work was tedious, filing, answering phones, etc. Could only work during business hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are doing a good job regardless of what the media portrays. Things are a lot different in a positive way, keep it up.
