  1. LAIKA - Growing Animation Company

I have been working at Laika, Inc

    Pros

Good company, growing and still open to employee opinions. One of the only places for Stopmotion animation in the US. Has both commercial and feature divisions. LAIKA is very open to trying new situations and new technologies. Coraline was it's first feature film, and the success of that film is based on the hand-picked individual artists that work to create the assets, and they were given room to showcase their talents. This is a company that values that sort of talent. Innovative and willing to grow.

    Cons

Not the best at managing resources, communication and decision making. Human Resources department is still working out some of the bugs in communicating about lay-offs and when the actual end date is. Managers on the highest level just underwent a change and assigned a very seasoned producer (award winning) to become President, this should help alleviate some of the previous issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make decisions in a timely fashion. Communicate with employees.

Great crew, poor management, no long term plan

I worked at Laika, Inc full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great support and belief in stop motion as an art.
Good financial support to back truly creative projects.
For the most part, the crew is great - full of heart and dedication.
Good benefits for a film company - some relocation help, health benefits, 401K available.

    Cons

Weak producers/managers. Many managers have been promoted up or brought in above their heads.
Unrealistic goals due to weak preparation before new project begins resulting in abuse of employees to complete project.
Lack of a long term, cohesive vision for the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on the company before you take on another project. Increase your strength as a company with goals and producers/managers you can trust before you move forward. Once you have them in place - talk to them! Use their expertise to drive your company's future. Realize that your strength lies in your great employees and great projects. Recognize your strongest and most dedicated employees, reward them for their dedication and see how you can get them to align their goals to the company's. Have your next project flushed out BEFORE you commit.
