Excellent benefit package, lower than market salaries, and very difficult to advance internally.

ProsExcellent benefits package (e.g. - matching 401k, personal time off, holiday pay, decent health insurance coverage, tuition reimbursement.)
A leader in United Way fundraising.
Free parking.
Fair severance package when they lay you off when the company isn't doing well.

ConsLower than going market rate for wages/salaries.
Middle management is not encouraged to professionally develop the talent of their workforce by senior level management.
Good ole boy mentally when it comes to promotions and advancement.
Preference is given to outside talent over internal employees when it comes to filling new/existing job vacancies.
Surface deep emphasis placed upon employee develepment (e.g. - Individual Development Plans), but not backed up with a way to implement this type of company wide initiative (i.e. - lack of mentorship program, no employee training, no career track progression paths).
Career exploration into different departments/job categories is not encouraged and employees are often find themselves stuck in a silo.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not be afraid to walk the walk instead of talking the talk. Encourage your middle management to train and develop the impressive talent of your workforce to help improve overall company performance and boost employee retention.
